Ondang: A House-Made Tofu Course near Seoul Station

⚡ THE QUICK TAKE
  1. 온당 (Ondang) — a bright, modern 두부 한정식 (house-made-tofu Korean set-meal) restaurant in Seogye-dong, a 5-minute walk from Seoul Station. Part of “KOREAN TOFU CULTURE,” it makes fresh tofu on-site every morning using a method recorded in the 16th-century Joseon cookbook Suunjapbang (Korean soybeans + natural sea-salt brine).
  2. Ordered: the 점심특선 (lunch special) full course — a tofu/zucchini/meat 전 (jeon) appetizer, 한우 떡갈비 (hanwoo minced-beef patty), 비지찌개 (soybean-pulp stew), a whole grilled 삼치 (Spanish mackerel) cut tableside, 뚝배기 rice with banchan, and a 호박식혜 (sweet pumpkin rice drink) to finish.
  3. Refined, healthy, and deeply Korean, minutes from the station. Cards OK, English-friendly. Visited 2026.

Five minutes on foot from Seoul Station, in the quiet Seogye-dong streets on the west side, there’s a bright, calm restaurant built around one humble ingredient done beautifully: 두부 (tofu). 온당 (Ondang) — part of a project called “KOREAN TOFU CULTURE” — makes its own tofu fresh on the premises every single morning, and builds a full Korean set-meal (한정식) around it. If you want a healthy, refined, deeply Korean meal that’s easy to reach and gentle on the palate, this is one of the best options near the station. Visited 2026.

Cultural context for foreign visitors: 두부 (tofu / dubu) has been on the Korean table for centuries, and a good tofu house is judged by whether it makes its own. 한정식 (hanjeongsik) is the Korean multi-dish set meal — a sequence of small, balanced dishes served together. Ondang combines the two: a tofu-centric hanjeongsik where the star ingredient appears in several forms — pan-fried, in a soybean-pulp stew (비지), and served plain and fresh — surrounded by the other elements of a proper Korean meal.

What Is Ondang — A House That Makes Tofu

Ondang’s interior is the first surprise: bright, airy and contemporary, with pale wood tables, warm red bench seating and big windows — a world away from the dark, rustic look of a traditional tofu house. It feels calm and modern, the kind of place you’d happily bring parents or take your time over lunch.

Two views of the bright, modern interior of Ondang - pale wood tables and chairs with red bench seating and a wall poster reading 두부 한 모, 한국의 식탁 (Tofu on the Korean Table), and a sunlit dining room with large windows overlooking the Seoul cityscape

But the heart of the place is the tofu-making itself, visible in the open kitchen behind a linen curtain — staff in “KOREAN TOFU CULTURE” aprons working from early morning.

A wall panel tells the story: Ondang’s tofu follows a method recorded in the 16th-century Joseon cookbook 『수운잡방 (Suunjapbang)』 — soak and grind Korean soybeans into soy milk, then set it with 천일염 간수 (natural sea-salt brine). They make it fresh every day from 7 AM: “made today, served today.”

And here it is — the fresh tofu itself, served soft and warm, pale and delicate. Taste it plain first: it’s milky, faintly sweet, and nothing like the firm blocks from a supermarket.

What Should I Order?

The easy, rewarding choice — and what we had — is the 점심특선 (lunch special), a full course that walks you through the kitchen’s range in one sitting. It’s not a bargain-basement meal (the quality and the hanwoo push it mid-range), but it’s a lot of beautifully made food. Here’s what the course includes.

The Jeon Appetizer — Tofu, Zucchini & Meat

The meal opens with a plate of 전 (jeon, pan-fried in egg batter): a slab of the house tofu, sweet 애호박 (zucchini) jeon, and savory 고기전 (meat jeon), with a soy-vinegar dip. It’s a perfect, gentle start — the tofu clean and soft, the zucchini sweet, the meat savory — and it shows off the fresh tofu in its simplest cooked form.

한우 떡갈비 — The Standout

The dish that steals the course: 한우 떡갈비 (hanwoo tteok-galbi) — minced premium Korean beef, seasoned and formed into little patties, here topped with a swipe of cream and crunchy fried garlic. If it looks like a Western hamburger steak, the resemblance ends at the first bite: the texture is softer, springier and more savory-nutty (고소한), the mince finely worked so it’s tender and juicy rather than dense. It’s a genuinely refined take on a Korean classic, and the highlight of the meal.

비지찌개 — The Soybean-Pulp Stew You Can’t Find Elsewhere

A tofu house’s secret weapon: 비지찌개 (biji-jjigae). 비지 (biji) is the ground soybean pulp left over from making tofu — most places discard it, but a house that makes its own tofu has it fresh, and turns it into a thick, comforting stew. Ondang’s is 구수한 — deeply nutty, toasty and savory, with a warmth and depth you simply can’t get from anywhere that doesn’t make its own tofu. It’s the dish reviewers rave about, and the most quietly special thing on the table.

삼치구이 — Grilled Mackerel, Cut at Your Table

A whole 삼치 (samchi, Spanish mackerel) arrives grilled on a long ceramic plate with a charred lemon and a sprig of rosemary — and then a server cuts it tableside with scissors, portioning it for you. Squeeze the lemon over the top: the skin is crisp and savory (바삭하고 고소한), the flesh moist and clean. It’s a lovely bit of service and a reminder that this is a proper sit-down meal, not a rushed one.

The Finish — Ttukbaegi Rice, Banchan & Pumpkin Sikhye

The savory meal lands with 뚝배기 밥 (rice in a hot stone pot) — here a fragrant herb-and-rice mix — served with a tray of seasonal banchan: seasoned spinach, stir-fried burdock, kimchi, and more. Mix, match, and round out the meal at your own pace.

And the graceful ending: a chilled glass of 호박식혜 (hobak sikhye) — the traditional sweet Korean rice-malt drink, here made with pumpkin for a mellow, golden, gently sweet finish. Drink it cold; it’s the perfect digestif to close a tofu feast.

The Verdict

Ondang is the answer to “where can I have a healthy, genuinely Korean meal near Seoul Station without it being a rushed station-food experience?” It’s a bright, modern house that makes its own tofu every morning, serving a full set-meal that shows the ingredient at its best: a delicate jeon appetizer, a standout 한우 떡갈비 that’s softer and nuttier than any hamburger steak, a 비지찌개 so nutty and comforting you can only get it at a place that makes its own tofu, a whole grilled samchi cut at your table, and a 호박식혜 to finish. It’s not the cheapest lunch near the station, but it’s one of the loveliest and most wholesome. Walk over from Seoul Station, order the lunch special, taste the tofu plain, and don’t miss the biji stew. Recommended.
