Jeju Island is Korea’s favorite holiday escape — and its food is a world of its own. Volcanic soil, surrounding seas worked by the famous haenyeo (women free-divers), and a distinct island culture give Jeju a cuisine you can’t get on the mainland: black pork, ultra-fresh seafood, a unique hangover soup, rockfish feasts and more. This guide breaks down what to eat in Jeju and points you to our honest, photo-driven reviews of where to eat it — most within easy reach of Jeju Airport and the Jungmun resort area.
1. Jeju Black Pork (흑돼지, Heukdwaeji)

The island’s signature dish. Jeju’s black pigs give pork that’s richer and more flavorful than the usual, grilled over fire and dipped in meljeot (anchovy sauce). The one thing every visitor should eat at least once. Our pick is a dry-aged specialist in Jungmun:

2. Haenyeo Seafood (해녀 해산물)

Jeju’s haenyeo — grandmothers who free-dive for abalone, sea urchin and conch — are a UNESCO-recognized part of the island’s culture, and the freshest seafood comes straight from them. Minutes from the airport:
👉 Dodu Haenyeo’s House — fresh seafood near Jeju Airport
3. Jeju Haejangguk (해장국, Hangover Soup)

Jeju’s version of Korea’s morning-after soup is a clear-but-rich beef-bone broth with bean sprouts and thin beef — lighter than Seoul’s. The most famous Jeju brand, at its home on the island:
👉 Eunhuine Haejangguk (Jungmun)
4. Rockfish & Jeju Hyangtosik (우럭 · 향토음식)

For a full Jeju home-style spread, steamed rockfish (우럭) with a lavish banchan table is a local classic — a great way to taste island cooking beyond pork and raw seafood:
👉 Gojipdol Wureok — Jeju rockfish & hyangtosik (Jungmun)
5. Jeju Tonkatsu (돈까스)

Not everything in Jeju is traditional — the island also has a serious crispy-cutlet game. This spot does an ultra-crunchy Japanese-style tonkatsu locals line up for:
👉 Basak Donkkaseu — Jeju’s crispiest cutlet
6. Coffee & Cafes

Jeju is a cafe island, full of ocean-view coffee shops. For a calm, stylish cup — handy near the airport before a flight:
👉 Cafe Jinjeongseong Jongjeom — coffee near Jeju Airport
7. A Jeju Night Out

When the sun’s down, Jeju has a surprisingly soulful bar scene. Our favorite for a late drink with vinyl and atmosphere:

8. A Splurge: Hotel Buffet in Jungmun

If you want one easy, everything-in-one-place meal — especially with family — the luxury-hotel buffet in Jungmun covers seafood, Korean and global stations:
👉 The Park View, Jeju Shilla — lunch buffet (Jungmun)
9. Galchi (갈치, Cutlassfish) — Without the Markup

Galchi (cutlassfish) is Jeju’s signature fish — but tourist spots can overcharge for it. For the real thing at honest local prices, head to Andeok on the southwest coast: braised galchi-jorim that comes with free sweet-spicy galchi-gangjeong.
👉 Samgeori Sikdang — honest Jeju galchi (Andeok)
10. Buckwheat Noodles (메밀, Memil)

Buckwheat is a signature Jeju crop (those autumn buckwheat fields!). For 100% Jeju buckwheat noodles — house-milled, gluten-free — head to Andeok near Shinhwa World. The perilla-oil makguksu is the must-try.
👉 Memilbat-e Gasiri — 100% Jeju buckwheat noodles (Andeok)
Practical Tips for Eating in Jeju
- Rent a car. Jeju’s best food is spread out; most spots here cluster near the airport or in Jungmun/Seogwipo on the south coast.
- Cards work almost everywhere (Visa/Mastercard).
- Black pork + haenyeo seafood are the two must-eats unique to the island.
- Plan a south-coast food day: haejangguk for breakfast, rockfish or black pork for dinner, a cafe in between — all doable around Jungmun.
- Go early for the famous spots; Jeju’s best get queues in peak season.
