Want to actually taste Korean craft alcohol — not the green-bottle supermarket soju, but the real, house-brewed stuff — without leaving Gangnam? 느린마을 양조장 (Neurin Maeul Brewery) is the answer. It’s a brewery-pub, a short walk from Hakdong Station, where the makgeolli is fermented on-site (you can literally see the tanks bubbling behind glass), and it changes character through four “seasons” as it matures. Add a smooth, 100%-distilled 21% soju and a menu of Korean pub food (안주, anju) good enough to visit for on its own, and you have one of the most enjoyable, foreigner-friendly drinking experiences in the city. Visited 2026.

Cultural context for foreign visitors: 막걸리 (makgeolli) is Korea’s milky, lightly sparkling, mildly sweet unfiltered rice wine — the country’s oldest alcoholic drink, once the farmer’s daily brew. Most makgeolli you’ll try is mass-produced; 느린마을 (Neurin Maeul, “slow village”) is a well-known craft brewery brand whose signature makgeolli is live and unpasteurized, sold at different fermentation stages named after the seasons — 봄 (spring), 여름 (summer), 가을 (autumn), 겨울 (winter) — each a little drier and stronger than the last. Tasting them side by side is like watching the drink grow up.

What Is Neurin Maeul — a Brewery You Can Drink Inside
Neurin Maeul isn’t just a bar that serves makgeolli; it’s a working 양조장 (brewery). At the Hakdong branch, the fermentation room sits behind glass right on the street — a row of gleaming steel tanks marked 1 through 5, with a “발효중 (fermenting)” sign glowing above them.

That’s the whole idea: the rice wine you drink was brewed right here, which is why it tastes alive in a way bottled makgeolli doesn’t. The building itself is a modern take on a hanok — dark timber cladding under a traditional tiled roof, warmly lit at night. It reads as contemporary and stylish rather than rustic, which makes it comfortable for dates, small groups, and first-timers alike.

Where Is It?
The Hakdong branch is on a side street in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, about a 5-minute walk from Hakdong Station (Line 7), and within reach of the Eonju/Gangnam areas. It’s an easy add-on to a night out in southern Seoul.
What Should I Drink? Makgeolli by the Season, and 21% Soju
Start with the 느린마을 막걸리. Order it by the kettle and, if you can, try more than one “season” — the younger 봄 (spring) is sweeter and softer, the later 겨울 (winter) drier and more alcoholic. It’s cloudy, gently fizzy, and completely different from anything bottled. Then, for the spirits drinkers, the standout: 느린마을 소주 21.

This is not the usual diluted green-bottle soju. It’s a 100%-distilled soju at 21% ABV — made by properly distilling makgeolli rather than mixing neutral spirit with water and sweetener. The result is clean, smooth, and remarkably easy to drink, with a soft finish and none of the harsh chemical bite. At 21%, it’s gentle by distilled-soju standards. Sip it neat and cold; it’s a revelation for anyone who thinks they don’t like soju.
What Should I Order to Eat?
Neurin Maeul takes its 안주 (anju, food-to-drink-with) seriously — reviewers rate the food as highly as the makgeolli. Build a spread to share. Here’s the lay of the land, with what we ordered marked ★.

김치/파전 반반 — The Makgeolli Classic
The definitive makgeolli pairing, and the dish to start with: 김치/파전 반반 (half kimchi-jeon, half pajeon) — a big Korean savory pancake split down the middle, one side crisp-edged kimchi-jeon, the other a green-onion-and-seafood pajeon studded with red chili. See the photo at the top of this post. In Korea, jeon and makgeolli are the ultimate rainy-day combination — the sizzle of the pan is said to sound like falling rain. The “반반 (half-and-half)” format lets you taste both: the kimchi side tangy and savory, the pajeon side sweet and oniony. Tear off pieces and alternate with sips of the cloudy rice wine.
수육 두부김치 — Pork, Tofu & Kimchi
The heartiest anju on our table: 수육 두부김치 (suyuk with tofu and stir-fried kimchi) — thin slices of tender boiled pork belly alongside soft tofu and a mound of warm, stir-fried aged kimchi. Build each bite yourself: a slice of pork, a piece of tofu, a little kimchi on top. The clean, fatty pork and the mild tofu are the perfect foil for the sour-spicy kimchi, and the whole thing is made to be eaten slowly over drinks.

치즈 닭함박 & 애호박 고추장찌개 — Comfort & Heat
For something richer, the 치즈 닭함박스테이크 (cheese chicken hamburg steak) is a crowd-pleaser: a chunky chicken patty baked under a blanket of bubbling, browned cheese in a hot pan — savory, gooey comfort food that goes surprisingly well with the dry winter makgeolli or the soju.

And for a hit of home-style Korean heat, the 애호박 고추장찌개 (Korean zucchini gochujang stew) — a bubbling pot of gochujang-based broth with soft 애호박 (Korean zucchini), onion and pork. It’s spicy, deeply savory and comforting, and a spoonful of the hot broth between drinks resets the palate.

문어숙회 샐러드 — The Fresh One
To balance all the richness, the 문어숙회 샐러드 (poached octopus salad) is a lighter option: tender slices of poached octopus over shredded cabbage and greens with tomato and a bright, lemony dressing. Cool, clean and a little chewy, it’s the plate that keeps the table from feeling heavy.

Practical Notes for Visitors
- ~5-min walk from Hakdong Station (Line 7), in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam.
- Open evenings until ~midnight — a dinner-and-drinks or late-night spot. Check Google for opening/last-order.
- Try the makgeolli by “season.” Ask for the spring (봄, sweeter) vs winter (겨울, drier/stronger) to taste how fermentation changes it.
- The 21% distilled soju is the sleeper hit — smooth and clean; order it if you think you dislike soju.
- Cards accepted (Visa / Mastercard); foreign-language service available.
- Great value for Gangnam — ₩30,000 ($20 USD)–₩40,000 ($27 USD) per person covers drinks and a shared spread of anju.
- Rainy day? Order the jeon. Jeon + makgeolli is the classic Korean rainy-day ritual.
- Pair it with other Korean nights: for a traditional tavern, see Mapo Naru near Gongdeok; for a refined Gangnam course meal, Sudam Hanjeongsik.
The Verdict
Neurin Maeul Brewery is the answer to “where can I actually try good Korean craft alcohol in Gangnam?” — and it makes the experience easy and genuinely fun. The house-brewed makgeolli, fermenting in tanks you can see from the street, is alive and changes through its four “seasons”; the 21% distilled soju is clean and smooth enough to convert soju skeptics; and the anju — the kimchi/pajeon 반반, the suyuk with tofu-kimchi, the cheese chicken hamburg, the zucchini stew — is good enough to come for even without the drinks. It’s a stylish modern-hanok room, foreigner-friendly, and great value for the neighborhood. Grab a kettle of makgeolli, order the jeon and the suyuk, and drink Korea’s oldest beverage the way it’s meant to taste — fresh from the tank. Highly recommended.
